231 - Stupidcold

That's what the local news station predicts for next week. Stupid cold. The actual headline is: "Rain, Then Snow, Then #StupidCold."

Sunday will have a low of 5. That's 5... degrees. Their map shows a low of -6 early Monday morning. Needless to say that I will be staying indoors as much as possible (and I don't foresee that Bo will be itching to go out as much as usual either).

At 20 degrees Bo doesn't have as much interest in staying out and exploring. :)

LET ME IN

The homestead.

Apparently we had a double rainbow going in the yard, I ran and got the shovel to find the pots of gold but the ground was so hard I let the Leprechauns have it.

So even at 23 degrees, the sun eventually melts most of the snow, except where the shadows fall. This is where I parked my car, hahaha.

And that's all folks... Just gonna feed everyone, watch some (more) tv and try to stay warm.

229 - Goodbye 2013

2013 has been a doozie... Then again, Dad reminded me that over a 3-day period during Christmas 2012 we dented our truckbed, slid down an embankment into a ditch, and scalped the truck just before a torrential downpour and drastic temperature drop. Not to mention that the RV almost caught on fire earlier in the year. 2013 was better than 2012 in some respects...

I don't want to do a laundry list of what's been good and bad because some of the bad still stings, but I will say that I am thankful that heading into 2014 things seem to be looking up on many fronts. Not just for us, but for others as well.

Tonight is a pretty low-key NYE. I intended to grab wings and fries on the way home from Cookeville, but Timberwolf was (inexplicably) closed. I went the long way home JUST so I would pass that way and it was (inexplicably) closed... So I stopped by Walmart instead and bought wings so I could make my own damned wings and fries. So much for being lazy for a night. I didn't pick up any movies either, by the time I made it to the checkout line I was ready to scream... where do all these people come from??? Carthage isn't that big!!! Crowds are exactly why I didn't want to shop until at least next week, so the holiday rush would be over.

Anyway, Bo and I went for a couple of walks today. I took him toward the creek and back up to the hickory tree before I headed out. I figured it was only fair since I was putting him in the basement for a couple of hours. And then when I got home I walked him a little to burn some of his energy off. He's always manic when he comes back inside after being in the basement, I call him Frog-Boy because he reaches the end of his leash and keeps trying to run.... he looks like a frog jumping. I can't wait until we have a fence so I can let him run until his heart's content. As it is, he's subject to my whims (which vary greatly according to how cold it is out there). He's all muscly and lean but I know his breed likes to be more active than he is and I can tell he gets bored sometimes.

I ordered a supplement for him, to ensure that he's getting all of the vitamins and minerals he needs now that I'm making some of his food. For the moment I'm still adding kibble, and that also supplies some balanced nutrition, eventually I'll probably stop since he tends to eat around the kibble (spoiled ass). This stuff got great reviews and is supposed to help with digestion too. Digestion is a major issue for him and has been since day one. I know changing up their food can do it, but he just seems to have a sensitive tummy; maybe that's why he wasn't gaining weight when he was a baby. Anyway, he loves it. It's a powder but you add water to it and it makes a gravy. Like Gracie, Bo is a gravy lover. I am interested to see if it makes a difference.

Pictures...

I love the sky in this one. Such a pretty blue and the clouds have a lot of contrast to them.

The winter barn.

Bo's favorite... walks.

I almost accomplished my music file cleanup. Just a few more duplicates to take care of. I ditched iTunes and went on a search for a new music platform. I narrowed it to three candidates and settled on Music Bee. I LOVE IT. It has so many neat features... I can delete songs from both the player and my computer, new music goes into an inbox, a little box shows me either the album cover or song lyrics, I can rate by 1/2 stars... that's the tip of the iceberg. So color me pleased.

Well... that's it for now. It's 8:44... if I'm lucky I'll make it to midnight before I fall asleep but I'm not counting on it since my eyes feel pretty heavy right now... Happy 2014!

228 - More of the Same

The last three days I have been going through music files and removing duplicates and empty folders. It's tedious, but I have already cleared up 134 GB of hard drive space. It's a project I've attempted to tackle for several years now... to be able to actually see my music files and find what I'm looking for feels like a huge accomplishment. Right now I'm doing a last check for duplicates before uploading everything to my iTunes folder so I can start rating it and removing the ones I don't listen to. I'll keep them in case someday I have a change of heart but they go to an external hard drive where they aren't in the way.

Today Bo and I took a walk to the creek. It's flowing pretty nicely. Bo actually waded in and sniffed around, as evidenced by this dirty paw:

My second pendant arrived today. It's more dainty than the first, weighs a lot less too. I've decided to wear this one around my neck and hang the other in our bedroom. I still haven't scattered the ashes because I was waiting on this to arrive... and now I am procrastinating because I'm still not ready to let go. But I think I'll do it soon.

So other than that, it's just business as usual around here. I bought some Murphy's Oil Soap and either today or tomorrow I'm going to mop. The floors are looking a little dry and I don't know if it's because of all the Swiffering we did after Bo's accidents or if it's because of winter and the heater.... maybe a combo. In any case, it's time to clean and maintain. And, I might add (hopefully not to jinx it all), Bo hasn't pee'd or pooped in the house in almost a month, which is a very, very good thing.

227 - Thar She Blows...

Last night was quite windy. It was a Guntersville kind of windy with gusts of up to 60 and 70 mph, tornado warnings, etc. I went out and secured everything that could blow away and then cowered in the house while watching the news.

Okay so it wasn't that bad... it was a little dicey there for a bit, and the satellite signal was lost, but when it came back I watched Saturday Night Live and was highly entertained. I haven't watched in probably a decade, but it was a Justin Timberlake/Jimmy Fallon show and it made me laugh.

At one point before the worst of it hit, Bo decided that he needed to go potty. I tried to tell him... but he did the pee pee dance and looked like he wanted to cry, so out we went. After gust of wind blew his ears back and made them float like Dumbo trying to fly away, he grabbed the leash in his mouth and trotted me back to the door as if to say he'd had quite enough thankyouverymuch.

Saw this and thought it was cool. Seeing it like this can make you wonder if we aren't organisms living within a larger organism and then you wonder how much bigger it could all be...

Bo found his spot on the bed... and he didn't move when I got in, I just kind of slid under his head... spoiled puppy.

And finally, I leave you with a little dose of Christmas. I love Animal.

226 - Drizzly Bear

Gloomy outside. It's four(ish) days to Christmas and almost 70 degrees out, but rainy. Supposed to have thunderstorms tonight. The rest of the week is going to be colder so it was nice to go outside and take Bo for a couple of walks between drizzly spells.

Honestly, because he goes to the bathroom so often that I don't much look forward to taking him out, but he does make me smile on walks and I try to remember to make time for it... it's not that I don't have the time, it's just not quite a habit for me yet. I do like walks with Bo if it's not too cold. Not the pulling, the pulling annoys me... but when he swoops down and grabs a stick or a pine cone and trots down the road, tail wagging, proud as can be with his prize. And if he's not caught up in sniffing out the goings on of other animals on the side of the road, he'll sometimes pause and tear into the pinecone. I don't know how he does it, they're prickly, but he curls his paws around it and nips at it, pulling it apart like there are no pointy pieces stabbing him in the mouth as he does so. Sometimes he tries to sneak one into the house and doesn't quite understand why I take his prize and toss it unceremoniously back into the yard. Been there, done that, cleaned up the mess.

His curiosity about the cows is cute too. He watches them and sometimes climbs the embankment to bounce through the grass like he's one of the herd. Scares the calves, poor things. I just make sure he doesn't get too close to the electrical wire and let the entertainment happen. Once they run away he sticks his nose as deep into the grass as it will go and snuffle-snorts his way along until he bounds back down to the pavement.

Lately on the return trip he's been grabbing the leash with his mouth to lead me home. Sometimes he'll be playful, running around and bowing at me, but more often than not he just grabs it and prances back home, walking me right to the door.

If it weren't for Bo I might go crazy out here. Kind of a paradox huh? Since he also drives me crazy sometimes.

Baked potato for dinner.

I made beef stroganoff last night, but it seemed like a potato night so I'll have leftover stroganoff for dinner tomorrow (and another meal or two), and probably a salad for lunch. I don't know why but I will choose potatoes over almost anything else. I'm like the Bubba Gump of potatoes... I like them boiled, fried, baked, shredded, mashed, au gratin, roasted... as long as it's a potato I'm happy. Tonight's version is hassle-backed with parmesan and butter in alternating slices, then I chopped some chicken I cooked the other day and topped it with cheese. It's tasty. Bo is currently pawing at me to share... not happening. He has started a new phase of grabbing with his paws and claws by curling them under and drawing whatever he's grabbing at toward him. But he's a good puppy, he backs off when he's told. Maybe not for long, but at least he does for a while.

Got a card from the vet's office today... made me cry for the first time in a couple of days. I've been better but still have moments where I think of her and get sad. It wasn't so much the card, but what Dr. D wrote. And that the cat on the front bears a slight resemblance to Gracie. (the ball of light is from the flash, not part of the picture on the card)

On tonight's agenda, prepping Bo's beef stew (beef and carrots simmered for a while with the broth I had leftover from something else, and water), added a slurry of flour and water to thicken it a smidge, then bulgur wheat and a little cheese... mixed with some of his kibble. I need to get more veggies when I go to the store. Until I get the supplements to make sure he's getting all the vitamins he needs and/or until I run out of this bag of kibble, he'll be eating a mixture of both. He won't miss the kibble. As it is I'm picking up little pieces that he nibbles and spits onto the rug. Spoiled. And I'll tell you - the chicken jerky and sweet potato jerky are a HIT. He tries to hunt those down to feed himself when I'm not looking. He doesn't chew the chicken very much, twice, maybe three times. The sweet potato gets a little more mastication. It's a wonder he doesn't have more gas than he does - which actually seems less lately.

He seems to like it:  http://youtu.be/bozZ-BBzEaM

After that... Pinterest and movies... yipee. Red hot Saturday night. ;)

225 - AD

More cool moon shots. Last night the mist in the air made for a really neat effect.

And there was something squeaky in the yard. Bo didn't seem to care so neither did I.

The end.
